Michael Joseph Jackson was an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actor. Called the King of Pop, his contributions to music and dance, along with his publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades. His distinctive sound and style has influenced numerous artists of various music genres. Jackson is one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. Unlike many artists, Jackson did not write his popular songs on paper. Instead he would dictate into a sound recorder, and when recording he would sing the lyrics from memory. As a musician, he explored a variety of music genres, including pop, soul, rhythm and blues, funk, rock, disco, post-disco, dance-pop and new jack swing.
