Don McLean is an American folk rock artist that built his fame on one super famous track, "American Pie". A beautiful, soulful ballad, "American Pie" was partly inspired by the death of rock legend Buddy Holly. "American Pie" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. With a total running time of 8:36 encompassing both sides of the single, it is also the longest song to reach No. 1. This made playing the track on the radio difficult because everyone loves commercials! In 2001 "American Pie" was voted No. 5 in a poll of the 365 Songs of the Century. Sadly, McLean's very popular song has no role in the hormone raging film American Pie.
